Process & timing

How long does a custom cover take?+

Custom covers take varying amounts of time, depending on a number of factors:

  • The complexity and style of the cover you're seeking
  • If it's going to become part of a continuing series and therefore needs a design system throughout
  • How long it takes for you to provide the print template PDF (this is provided by services such as IngramSpark and Amazon KDP and is necessary to develop the print ready files)

We estimate that 4–6 weeks is usually sufficient, as long as all necessary information is provided (measurements, sizes, title, and any other needed copy). However, we also often finish earlier than this — it's just to ensure there's a rough idea.

If the complexity of your request is greater, this timeline may be different, and this will be openly and clearly discussed with you and in the signed terms of service agreement before starting the project.

How many concept directions do I get?+

Two distinct directions are developed for custom work. Both are complete ideas, not rough concepts. You choose the direction we take into the final cover files, and provide feedback about tweaks (changing the colour, the font, etc.)

Pricing & payment

How does payment work?+

Once we've talked through what you're after, I'll send you a TOS document that lays out the expectations in terms of price, timeline and deliverables, just to make sure we're both on the same page. After you've returned the signed TOS, I'll send you the first half of the invoice for 50%, and then at the end, the second invoice for the other 50% of the total.

I take payments via PayPal.

Is the deposit refundable?+

Refunds are discussed in detail in the TOS document sent to you at the start of each project, but in general, a refund is not possible unless extenuating circumstances cause us to be unable to deliver what is promised in the original agreement (e.g. major sickness, natural disaster etc,).

Do you offer discounts for debut authors?+

Yes, if you're a debut indie author and looking for low cost work, I take on those cases sometimes as I'm happy to help those starting out. I've done both low and no-cost work for authors before, depending on what they need, and what time I have free. If you're looking for a particular budget or some extra help as a debut indie author, reach out and let's chat.

Rights & files

Who owns the cover?+

You'll have full rights to print the cover at the size it was created, and to use the ebook JPG for ebook services, or audiobook services respectively (basically: whatever you order, you can legally use it commercially for that intended purpose!).

We as the creators also reserve the right to still own the artwork and therefore use it in the website portfolio, and potentially in ads that showcase the design we do. If you specifically want to have your work not to be featured in ads and/or the site folio, please reach out to discuss this ahead of time, and we may come to an agreement, however that level of exclusivity is not default and may incur extra costs.

What files do I receive?+

The standard deliverables are:

  • Print-ready PDF (CMYK, with bleed, at your chosen trim size based on the template supplied from your chosen print service such as Amazon KDP or IngramSpark)
  • Ebook JPG (1600×2560 — the standard Amazon ebook cover size)
  • A 3D mockup of your book in situ (great for adding to your socials!)

If your order included other additional services, more files such as compressed video files will also be sent. If you're looking for ebook covers in a non-standard size, please ensure you let us know this at the start of a new project.

Can I modify the cover later?+

Yes, absolutely. If you'd rather I handle a tweak (second edition, new tagline, anniversary reissue), I charge a small hourly rate for returning work.

Can I resell the premade after I buy it?+

No, we don't allow for reselling of premades that have been purchased, nor do we accept returns/refunds of premades. Once purchased, they are for your use only.

Is this a fit?

What genres do you work in?+

We've most often worked with romance, romantasy, contemporary romance and poetry so far, but we're very open to other genres too, especially sci-fi and non-fiction. If you like the work in the portfolio but don't see your genre yet, please don't hesitate to reach out and chat with us about it!

The only firm lines we may draw are working with potentially harmful or especially controversial subjects. If you think your manuscript might fall under this, please feel free to reach out and we can chat further. We want to be sure that sensitive subjects are handled with the kind of care that readers deserve!

Do you work with traditional publishers?+

Not as often, but we're absolutely open to it! If you're interested in looping us in as part of your own traditional publishing process (assuming the publisher is ok with this), we'd be delighted to work with you! Conversely, if you're part of a publishing team looking for a freelance designer/illustrator to be part of a traditional publishing project, we're also very happy to work with you!
